History
I returned to cycling in 1995 and for a period of seven years became General Secretary of an established
cycling club. I consequently moved to the Braintree area and was surprised to see so many cyclists riding the
local lanes, many of them lone riders. Could there be an opportunity to create a local club to support them?
Braintree Velo CRC was formed in the January of 2005 with the help and support of sponsorship from
Trevor Maddern, from Ciclos Uno, and Simon Barnes of PCA. Our membership currently extends from
rural Rutland to London, with the majority living in the Braintree, Halstead, Cambridge and Suffolk
catchment area and offers a wealth of experience spanning many years of cycling.
We are pleased to welcome David Wyss of Countrywide Conservatories (a local company)
as an additional sponsor for the 2010 season onwards.
Activity
Throughout the winter months, from October to March, we meet at Castle Hedingham at 9.30am
for our weekly club run. The approximate distance is 50 to 60 miles, at steady state riding,
with a café stop on route where the usual friendly banter and jokes take place. From January we start our
training rides, in preparation for the forthcoming racing season which starts in March. Those members that do
not wish to race, continue on weekly club runs, or take part in Sportive, Audax and Charity events.
We are a friendly group, that also like to meet up occasionally, for a social evening.
